If you are ready to hang up the big city "glitz" and the massive traffic jams and endless overpasses and endless mall shopping complexes, you may be ready to come to Mountain Home for your retirement. Mountain Home was listed in February 14, 2005, issue of Wall Street Journal in their ENCORE section as one of the top areas to consider for retirement. What better endorsement can you ask for!

The area is known for its great outdoor recreation: good hunting and fishing, as well as boating, canoeing, water skiing, scuba diving, and other types of water sports.  There are mountain biking trails as well as hiking areas. The state parks in the area offer camping and outdoor lectures. The rivers in the area have world class trout fishing. For the bird lover, photographer, and rock hounds, Arkansas is differently a NATURAL state.

Other activities include antique car clubs and shows and many social organizations. For the antique collectors there are endless places to search out.  On the 4th of July there are many outstanding fireworks displays over the lake and at the college, where there is a display choreographed to music. There are civil war cannons and re-enactment demonstrations as well as art clubs and the Ozark Choral Society that rivals some of the best talent in the country.

In areas nearby Mountain Home, there are festivals such as the famous Turkey Trot each October, the Hoot 'n Hollin Days, and other small town parades and activities loved by many of the local crowd. In Yellville there is the Saturday music and dance on the square and other fun time activities.

If you choose to go to a little more bustling area, there many music theaters and outlet malls in Branson, Missouri, just about a two hour or less drive from Mountain Home. A short trip of two hours will take you to Springfield, Missouri, and about three hours will take you to Little Rock, Arkansas, where there are many cultural and sports activities with national tours. For a week end trip you can go to Mississippi to the Casinos or to Hot Springs, Arkansas, for the horse races. When you want to come back to the peacefulness and more "laid back" pace, you can come back to your Mountain Home then.

You will find the climate pleasing.  There are four distinct seasonsThe spring and fall colors are outstanding. The summers are usually warm to hot, but the lakes and rivers are excellent places to visit during the hot spells. The winters are mild, but it is not unusual to see a snowfall or two.
